Usage note

“Qīn” zhège cí kěyǐ yòng lái chēnghu qīnmì de rén, bǐrú jiārén huò hǎo péngyou. Tā yě kěyǐ biǎoshì “qīnwěn” de dòngzuò, dàn zài rìcháng wènhòu zhōng, gèng chángjiàn de shì yòng lái biǎodá qīnjìn hé àiyì.

The word 'dear' can be used to address close people, like family or good friends. It can also mean the action 'kiss', but in daily greetings, it is more commonly used to express closeness and affection.

在中文里,我们常常在写信或在手机上和朋友聊天时使用“亲”,就像英语里的“dear”。它听起来很温暖、友好,适合用于非正式的、亲密的场合。小孩子可以叫爸爸妈妈“亲”,但更常用在大人之间。

Zài Zhōngwén lǐ, wǒmen chángcháng zài xiěxìn huò zài shǒujī shàng hé péngyou liáotiān shí shǐyòng “qīn”, jiù xiàng Yīngyǔ lǐ de “dear”. Tā tīng qǐlái hěn wēnnuǎn, yǒuhǎo, shìhé yòng yú fēi zhèngshì de, qīnmì de chǎnghé. Xiǎo háizi kěyǐ jiào bàba māma “qīn”, dàn gèng cháng yòng zài dàrén zhījiān.

In Chinese, we often use 'dear' when writing letters or chatting with friends on the phone, similar to 'dear' in English. It sounds warm and friendly, suitable for informal, close situations. Little kids can call their dad and mom 'dear', but it is more common among adults.
